A lot of what the things we do for one another and our community seems to revolve around food. As author Barbara Coloroso once said, "There is something profoundly satisfying about sharing a meal. Eating together, breaking bread together, is one of the oldest and most fundamentally unifying of human experiences."
We've packed up sack lunches for the homeless, cooked and served meals for the Salvation Army's Anti-Sex Trafficking ministry, we've made countless meals together "in bulk" to share out to members of the church. We've hosted various Peace and Non-Violence Groups at our church, ensuring they are well fed with delicious cuisines that adhere to their preferred dietary and cultural restrictions. And every year, we make peanut brittle.
And it's safe to say that Living Peace Church makes the best homemade peanut brittle around. During the fall and holiday season each year, members gather together to embark on a 3 joyful day of peanut brittle making. In a typical season, we convert about 150 pounds of peanuts into over 300 pounds of delicious brittle! Due to the public health crisis in 2020, no peanut brittle was made.
Many of our other ministries to the church comes in the form of the the maintenance and upkeep of our property. We get together to rake leaves, pick up trash, clean up the woods, mow down the prairie, clean windows and other regular maintenance the property requires. We have tackled special projects as a church as well, such as assisting the Columbus Community Shelter Board with some volunteers for overflow housing for homeless women, built boardwalks and benches for our woods and prairie, resealing our parking lot, renovating rooms, and prepping for conference guests.
